My project is a comparative analysis of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein and The Last Man, and H.P Lovecraft’s “Cool Air” and “Herbert West, Reanimater”. Specifically, I examine the role that science played in both their origin and direction, and the differences between the ‘infancy of science’ of Shelly’s time, and the rapid proliferation of science in Lovecraft’s. From this, connections can be drawn to humanity, its limits, and the state of knowledge that should and should not be explored. Each author has a slew of historical and personal experiences to pull from, and their observations shape the world as we know it today. I hope this essay, and its associated artifact, provides one such perspective.
